In Godard’s controversial follow up to “Breathless”, he combines existential longing with political intrigue. Bruno Forrestier, a deserter of the French Army during the Algerian War of Independence, has fled to Geneva, Switzerland. Being trained by French dissidents to assassinate a political figure, he eventually decides against it. All the while he is falling in love with a beautiful Danish/Russian expatriate who may work for an Arab political group. Originally banned in France for its frank depiction of the use of torture used by both sides, French and Algerian, “Le Petit Soldat” is a must see for anyone who isn’t afraid of subtitles.
