Coming into the crosstown meet on Thursday February 3, the swim team was feeling very confident. Senior (and swim captain) Jacob Magruder said, “We have the strength in numbers. But it was a huge feat for the girls, they haven’t beaten CMR in years.” The girls won only three events, five fewer than CMR, but pulled out a 169-166 victory. CMR has won the last four city championships, so this was a huge confidence booster for the girls going into state.  The boys squad led the team in incredible victories, taking top places in seven of the eleven events. The boys triumphed over CMR, winning 177-78.The team practices every day after school with the CMR team, but they still compete with them at every meet. Most of the swimmers do not find it strange though. Magruder stated, “I have done club swimming for years, so that [practicing with the competition] is what we have always done. We go into it knowing these are the people that we have practiced with. It is a normal competitive reaction.” Saying this, they still enjoy themselves, and have involve themselves with the other team, getting to know them and becoming friends. Magruder continued, “Although we are still competitive, it is a friend on friend competition.”The team works extremely well together and it showed at crosstown. They won girls 200 medley, girls 200 freestyle, girls 400 freestyle, boys 200 medley, and boys 400 freestyle relays. Magruder said about the team, “We are all good friends we have each others backs. The team has consistent swimmers who are reliable. They know how to achieve.”Be sure to stop by the Swarthout Fieldhouse pool on Friday February 10 and Saturday February 11 to watch GFHS swimmers compete at the state meet.
